Flies

They're irritating and they can also bite; they carry germs and unfortunately there's no avoiding them especially in the summertime. They are considered as a primary pest in Australia. More importantly, flies are also a health hazard because of their potential to transmit disease. Therefore, fly control in the home and food handling establishments should be viewed as an important part of good health and sanitation.

Flies are easily recognizable with their flying and buzzing around. Several species of flies may be encountered in and around homes and buildings. Flies are very good at detecting movement and their antennae have very sensitive odour receptors.

They usually live from 8 to 30 days depending mainly on temperature.

During warm weather, fly numbers can build up rapidly. For example, house flies can develop from the egg to adult stage in less than 14 days. Thus with each female laying as many as 500 eggs, fly problems can become serious.

Juvenile flies are small legless grubs commonly referred to as maggots. They swarm throughout rotting food and then crawl away to find somewhere to pupate before they emerge as an adult fly. The sight of maggots crawling in the kitchen or garbage bin is very off-putting, to say the least.

Flies eat just about everything liquid or easily liquefied and need sugar and protein. In order to feed, they regurgitate digestive juices and wait for the meal to liquefy before sucking it up. On humans’ faces, they usually look for moisture. As they defecate and vomit whenever they land, flies can transfer the bacteria and other germs that can cause food poisoning, diarrhea, hepatitis, salmonella, polio, cholera, dysentery and even typhoid.

Handy tips:

  • The best way to reduce the number of flies around your home by eliminating breeding sites such as dung or garbage.
  • Always cover garbage bins and compost heaps with tight fitting lids.
  • Regularly remove pet manure, soiled bedding, straw, garbage and any other decaying plant and animal matter from around the home and garden.
  • Wet garbage should be wrapped in old newspaper and then put in plastic garbage bags. This results in easier emptying and cleaning of garbage cans and less material remaining to serve as fly breeding sites.
